Neuroscience of Influence and Persuasion
Keynote: Janet Sperstad

Our brain selects and inhibits information based on our motivations and needs.  In this session we                                 will leverage results from recent neuroscience research on how the brain organizes information and                                 impacts expectations and our relationships.  We will explore a model that identifies 5 key                                               motivational drivers for human behavior and decision making. 

 Learner Outcomes:

 •      Explore how our brain filters information and how this impacts our thinking and behavior.

 •      Uncover why we decide what we do and how to influence decision making and creativity.

 •      Discover 5 key factors that drive our social brain and behavior.

Session:  Silent Impact: Influence Through Purpose, Persistence and Passion

Keynote:  Joe Schmit

Joe Schmit is an author, award-winning broadcaster, community leader and popular keynote speaker.  As a sports broadcaster he has covered every major sporting event in the past 3 decades and has interviewed many of the biggest names in sports.  He joined KSTP-TV in 1985 and has won 17 Emmys from the National Television Academy.  He was also honored with a National Headliner Award in 2001. Joe is also a regular on 1500ESPN radio.
Before joining KSTP-TV in 1985, he was Sports Director for WBAY-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His career also includes positions as weekend sports anchor for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and WKBT-TV in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Joe earned his degree in Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Session:  Real ID in Minnesota

Keynote:  Jeff Davidman, Delta Air Lines VP, State and Local Gov’t Affairs.

Jeff Davidman is the Vice President – State and Local Government Affairs at Delta Air Lines. In this position, Jeff oversees the team that represents Delta before state and local units of government across the United States.
During Jeff’s tenure representing Delta, he has assisted with securing the necessary government support for the successful merger of Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines. He led Delta’s state and local government affairs efforts in securing State support and resources from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania which helped enable Delta to be the first airline in the world to purchase an oil refinery and to produce its own jet fuel. Jeff has also successfully led the efforts to pass legislation in multiple states that has provided more scheduling flexibility for Delta employees. 
Prior to his tenure at Delta, Jeff was an associate at the Minneapolis Law Firm Best and Flanagan, LLP as well as a Director of Government Affairs at Northwest Airlines. Before moving to the private sector, Jeff worked for nearly a decade in Minnesota Government, including as a Senior Policy Advisor to Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.
Jeff is a graduate of Miami University and William Mitchell College of Law. He was named a “40 Under 40” by the Minneapolis Business Journal in 2013.

Session:  Neuroscience of Influence and Persuasion

Keynote:  Janet Sperstad, Madison College Meeting and Event Management Associate degree program

Janet Sperstad’s professional history reflects her lifelong vocation: driving excellence in meeting and event management execution and education. She has dedicated her career to defining the competencies and career pathways that articulate meeting planning as a design discipline requiring skills in the social sciences, executive leadership, and the cognitive sciences. Her contributions are global in scope and rooted in over 25 years as a meeting professional and executive leader in the corporate and non-profit sectors. Ms. Sperstad has been employed by a Fortune 500 global company, a statewide association, and owned a professional event management firm.
She currently leads Madison College’s Meeting and Event Management Associate degree program, which she founded in 2002 and recently been selected as Competency Model Champion from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Ms. Sperstad has written for and been featured in a variety of industry publications, white papers, academic journal and is an internationally recognized meeting professional, teacher, and speaker.

Session:  Speed Networking

Facilitator:  Michael Nelson – VP Account Management, Central Region - Direct Travel

Michael Nelson has over fifteen years of travel industry experience--including meetings & incentives, hotel sales & marketing, corporate car rental, and travel management.
As the Vice President of Account Management, Michael works with Direct Travel customers on all facets of their travel programs. Michael and his team assist Direct Travel customers as they develop business plans, negotiate supplier contracts, analyze data/travel spend, and identify cost-savings opportunities. Michael is also heavily involved with new customer implementations and various consulting initiatives. 
Michael has served two terms on the Global Business Travel Association North Central chapter Board of Directors and is on the annual Education Summit Committee.
In his spare time, Michael enjoys travelling, kayaking and playing tennis and golf. Michael is also a certified yoga instructor and an online-ordained minister.

Session:  Embracing the Sharing Economy within your Managed Travel Program

Moderator:  Jan Shoemaker, Manager Global Travel Services, Land O’Lakes, Inc.

Jan began her career at Land O’Lakes in 1980.  Wearing several hats at Land O’Lakes, Jan was asked to take on the role of travel manager. A position she has held for over 20 years. 
Jan believes strongly in maintaining business relationships with fellow travel managers and travel industry veterans.  She has been actively involved in the local GBTA North Central Chapter and the global GBTA organization for several years. 
Jan and her husband Michael, who owns his own transportation company, are avid Twins fans and reside in Lakeville along their dog Zeus. 
Shoemaker has a bachelor’s degree in business management from Bethel University, Saint Paul, MN.

Keynote:  Jenny Bulgrin, Business Travel Sales Manager,  AirBNB

Jenny Bulgrin joined the Business Travel team at Airbnb in October 2015.  She has over 14 years of sales, marketing and events experience in several domestic and international markets including Milwaukee, London, New York City and San Francisco.  In her most recent role prior to Airbnb, Jenny was Senior Account Executive, Northwest Region for Marriott International. 


Keynote:  Charles Frank, Mobility Solutions Manager, Lyft

Charles is a Mobility Solutions Manager for Lyft, a ride-sharing company headquartered in San Francisco, CA. Charles manages strategic accounts in the Mid-West region, focusing on bringing custom solutions to match a company’s ground transportation needs.
Prior to Lyft, Charles spent the past decade working with small businesses at Avison Young Commercial Real Estate, Rocket Lawyer and Nestle, to find and address inefficiencies which could lead to cost savings.
In addition to his passion for small business, Charles enjoys spending time with his family, open water swimming, and San Francisco Bay Area sports.
Lyft is a mobile-phone app that improves and simplifies ground transportation. We are partnering with businesses to provide transportation solutions for corporate travel, commuting, meeting and events and more.

Moderator:  Tom Akin

Tom Akin has 17 years of experience working in the corporate travel industry.  Most recently, Tom was Global Travel Manager at Digital River in Minnetonka where he designed and implemented a global travel program, selected and implemented a global travel agency partner, rolled out a corporate travel card program and took a lead role implementing an expense management system. 
Previously Tom held positions as Global Travel Manager at both UnitedHealth Group and Lawson Software.
Tom has served on the Board of Directors for GBTA-North Central Chapter since 2010 and is currently President elect.
