President's Message

Happy Holidays!

As I am writing this note, it is before our Annual Scholarship Fundraiser. We do not publish until Dec 3 and of course the event is over.  I want to give a big THANK YOU to all of you who donated your time, an item or attended. Now start thinking about what you would do to improve your knowledge of the travel industry if you should win a scholarship.  Your next steps would be to apply, come early next year. Don’t worry I will remind you when the time comes. :-)

As I wind down my first year as president, I want to say how grateful I am for the following: My incredible Board of Directors who tend to the interests of our members and make our Chapter one of the best in the country. Chairman, Bernie Fautch, for his guidance for this rookie.  Our sponsors, who fund our educational programs that keep us on top of our game. To you members, who volunteer, connect and inspire us. You bring your creative ideas forward with speaker suggestions, member suggestions and dedication to our profession. Our guests who may be our managers, colleagues or customers, for them to find our content valuable to attend a meeting we appreciate your time and would love to see you more often. I try to talk to as many of you as I can. I want to hear your ideas, suggestions and yes, even constructive criticism to help us grow in 2019!

I am also grateful to my husband for supporting me in this role. It does take additional time and travel to be President but I am finding it very rewarding and learning new things every day. I am here to serve you all and honored you allowed me to take on this role. My door is always open.

Until I see you in January, please have a very happy and safe Holiday Season!

GBTA North Central – October Monthly Recap

“The Myth of Catching up” was presented to us by Audrey Thomas otherwise known as Organized Audrey.
Audrey detailed the three myths of catching up...Email/technology; cleaning up your inbox. Productivity; reduce number of meetings, limit decisions such as what to wear, what to eat and when to fill your tank.
Work/Life Integration; Unplug from devices every day and be intentional. Audrey also shared some of her daily habits such as starting every day with “My First Fifteen” where you jot down your daily top priorities, VIPs you want to connect with and other notes to keep your day productive. Another great way to prioritize your personal life is creating three bucket lists, things I want to do for me, things I want to do with my significant other and things I want to do with my kids or friends. Audrey ended the presentation with reminding us to find our happy place in a hobby that takes us away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives.



GBTA North Central – November Monthly Recap

Jack Reynaert shared his extensive knowledge on Travel Management and touched on key areas for additional cost control, economic growth and selling the importance of program compliance within your company.  Making changes within a company isn’t always easy, but it starts with leading by example and teaching new habits, such as being mindful when making travel arrangements and using negotiated discounts whenever possible.  Some companies think that being too strict on travel can turn an employee away.  However, after speaking with several Human Resource Managers, Jack found that to not be a concern. Adding employee perks such as increasing travel spend year over year when employees follow the company’s travel guidelines is a great incentive for employees to stay compliant. A few other notable items – have employees use company credit cards for travel expense, have their Manager review and approve travel arrangements, and reconciling expenses in a timely manner. Travel and related expenses can be very costly for companies and by applying a few minor changes to your travel policy can result in big company savings.The best travel management requires buyers and sellers to move to ever-changing music. They must keep their mutual rhythm by staying connected to a common goal. They must syncopate and have room to improvise, creating new and different value propositions as they grow.

Chapter President's Council

Upcoming Chapter President's Council in May

The GBTA - North Central Chapter will be hosting the Chapter President's Council in May. This is an opportunity to show industry leaders our great community! What an opportunity to promote your company to a large cross section of leaders.

The CPC meeting will be held in conjunction with our Education Summit, so anticipate seeing a few new faces at this showcase event.  We are looking for a few sponsors while they are in town. Thursday evening, after the Education Summit being held at the Renaissance Depot Hotel, we want to take this group to a venue that encapsulates the Great North, so if you have a venue that can accommodate around 50, we would like to hear from you.  We are also looking for a dinner sponsor for that evening.

They are meeting on Friday and there are sponsorship opportunities for breakouts, lunch and boxed lunches. Pricing will follow shortly.

All potential Direct Members can come to a meeting as a guest for free for their first meeting. Help spread the word about our great organization and when registering the potential Direct Member be sure to let us know.

As a reminder, the All Access Membership with GBTA does not include the cost to attend a meeting. Below is a list of our membership options that can be found on our website at

Community Direct Membership, $175, this membership requires a $75 fee to attend any meeting.
Community Allied Membership, $175, this membership requires a $75 fee to attend any meeting.
Membership & Meetings (formerly All-Inclusive), $395, this membership includes pre-paid regularly scheduled monthly meetings including the Scholarship Fundraising Event but excludes Education Summit.

Chapter Internship Open Position

Open Position for North Central Chapter Internship

The Chapter Intern position is to provide an individual interested in the travel industry the opportunity to work alongside various travel-related professionals. The Intern will gain exposure to the structure of the organization and will contribute to the success of all committees. This individual is expected to bring a new perspective to each team/project and will be encouraged to make suggestions on how the chapter can further develop.

This internship is an unpaid position; however, the intern will receive free chapter membership during the duration of the internship.  This membership grants access to the chapter website and monthly meetings free of charge.  The Intern schedule is flexible and number of expected hours/week.  The preference is a full year commitment; however, a semester (Spring 2019) commitment will be considered.

At the start of each new intern position, a committee board liaison will be selected to provide oversight and guidance to the position as well as a liaison between the chapter and the school (if applicable).  The board liaison will be responsible for communications to the board and other committees on tasks/projects that can be assigned to the intern.  This includes monitoring hours tracked to the chapter that have been agreed upon for membership reimbursement or that may be required by the school.

• Follows requirements set by their school if credits are achieved through the internship
• Assists all committees and board members with a la carte projects on an as needed basis
• Attends Monthly Board/Chapter Meetings and Events as school schedule permits
• Engagement across all committees to include attendance in committee meetings
• Meets with Committee Board Liaison to review credit commitment status on a monthly basis at minimum

Chapter Committees include:  Advertising & Sponsorships, Marketing & Communications, Education Summit, Governance, Hospitality, Membership, Monthly Meetings, Newsletter, Scholarships, Special Events, and Technology.
